A MAJOR study is under way to improve facilities at a popular Hartlepool recreation ground.

A specialist consultancy firm has started to draw up a blueprint for the development of Grayfields.

The firm, Steve Wells Associates, has been appointed because of its track record of securing grants from sources such as the National Lottery and the Football Foundation for other leisure schemes in which it has been involved.

Oliver Sherratt, Hartlepool Borough Council's head of sport and recreation, said: "A variety of sports, including football, cricket, rugby and bowls, is played at Grayfields.

"If we want to develop this site and improve facilities for the future, then we need a co-ordinated plan that pulls all these interests together.

"We need also to address matters like security on the site and plan for improved amenities such as play areas."

There have already been a number of meetings with sports groups and other interested parties as part of a six-month study, but the consultancy company is keen to get the views of as many people as possible.

Director Steve Wells said: "The most consistent message to come out of the meetings was the absolute enthusiasm for revitalising this site.

"It is not often you get such strong support where so many people from various backgrounds are involved.

"I think Grayfields is a tremendous community asset. However, we need to make the most of its vast potential and securing finance from a variety of external sources is vital if we are to achieve that."
