Darlington could be set for a cash windfall if former player Sean Gregan leaves Preston North End this summer.
Quakers hold a 15 per cent sell-on clause on the 28-year-old, who has been the subject of two transfer bids from Premiership new boys West Bromwich Albion.
The latest of these was a £1.4m offer which came yesterday but both bids have fell on deaf ears at Deepdale who say they want more money. The sell-on clause applies to 15 per cent on any fee after £400,000, meaning Quakers would pocket £150,000 if Preston were to accept a £1.4m offer.
Gregan has become one of the First Division's top-rated players since swapping Darlington for Deepdale in November 1996.
After coming through Quakers' youth ranks, Gregan made his name at Feethams as a central-defender but since signing for Preston in a £350,000 deal, the Guisborough-born 28-year-old has successfully been converted into a tough-tackling midfielder.
In January this year Darlington received £60,000 after a sell-on clause in the deal which took former striker Robbie Blake from Bradford to Burnley.
Meanwhile, former defender Paul Heckingbottom says he would like to see Quakers manage what they couldn't during the three years he was at Feethams - win promotion.
"I leave behind a lot of memories at Darlington," said Heckingbottom, who joined Norwich City last week in a free transfer .
"I was delighted to join Norwich after falling out of contract at Darlington.
"The chairman (George Reynolds) is a colourful character. He badly wants to succeed and I have a lot of friends from the area who badly want him to succeed.
"He's made his ambitions clear with the building of a new stadium up there in Darlington and I want promotion as much for him as I do the club."
