A COUNCIL has vowed life will be different when a multi-million pound civic square takes shape.
Going out with the old to make way for the new heart of Middlesbrough will not only be the present Victoria Gardens but the drinkers who go with it, who have been driving away other users of the park.
A spokesman for Middlesbrough Council said: "People can be assured we will take all reasonable steps with the new civic square to provide a safe environment.''
The assurance came as the council proposed Middlesborough's first no drinking zone, on the town's Easterside housing estate.
The council is next week expected to rubber stamp a ban on street drinking around the estate's shopping precinct.
A council spokesman said: "There has been consultation with local people, who have been concerned that a small grassed area near Broughton Avenue shops has attracted drinkers.
"Drinking often fuels anti-social situations and we have designated this area a no drinking zone - the first for Middlesbrough."
