A GROUP of girls have been encouraged to think about a career in engineering.
The teenagers, who are from various parts of the country, are spending a week at Newcastle University studying engineering.
As part of the course, the girls have also spent time at the Nutec centre at Haverton Hill, Billingham, Teesside.
Some of them undertook a helicopter water rescue and others a raft rescue.
Dr Ruth Vater, from the university, said: "It was a bit of fun, but it also encouraged them to work in teams.
"It also showed them the engineering that is needed for the machines and the safety features.
"We hope that after the course the girls, who are all aged 16 to 18, will consider taking up a career in engineering."
