PRIMARY school children had the opportunity to show off their talents in a sell-out show at the Durham Gala Theatre last week.

The pupils at St Godric's RC Primary School, in Newton Hall, had spent weeks preparing for their big night on Thursday, which involved each year group performing their own songs.

Musician Paul Shoren had led workshops in school to help them prepare for their show and even the youngest infants took part, having no qualms about singing to a 510-strong audience.

The songs were associated with subjects each year group was studying, so pupils from Years 3 and 4 had a travel and transport theme, Year 5 sang Victorian songs and Year 6 entertained with Second World War tunes.

There was even a show of fencing skills set to music to mark the primary's recent success in securing a Sports Mark award.

The performance ended with an Irish blessing and the national anthem.

Headteacher Christine Coxon said: "Working in the theatre was a fantastic experience for the children. It's been very exciting for them to be on stage and back stage and they've come through it like real troopers."
