THE dedication and commitment of a former chief executive of the Yorkshire Agricultural Society, who died aged 56 earlier this year, was marked by the presentation of a bench on the showground.
Society president Peter Smith officially handed the wooden seat over on the council lawn in memory of Robin Keigwin.
Mr Keigwin, of Masham, was appointed chief executive in 1992, when the society had just decided to remain at Harrogate, and he oversaw a £12m development of the ground, including the new pavilions and flower and food halls.
His death from cancer in February was described by Mr Smith as a great loss to the society. "Many of us lost a discreet confidante and a warm friend," he said at the bench presentation on Wednesday.
He said Mr Keigwin had enjoyed involvement in all aspects of the society but was especially keen to promote its education role, including the award of the Nuffield scholarships for young people in the farming industry.
Mr Keigwin's widow, Prue, gave an emotional thank-you to the society, supported by one of her two sons, Michael.
"I hope people will use the bench often and give Robin a thought when they do, perhaps even a toast," she said. "He had a vision for this society, he loved his job here and loved working with the people who make up the heart of the society. There was nobody more disappointed than he that he couldn't see it through.
"He would want me to wish the society every good fortune and that it will continue to flourish and influence, and I support that wholeheartedly."
