THE installation of more security cameras at RAF Fylingdales will result in "unlawful snooping" on walkers using bridleways and public rights of way near the station, members of the North York Moors National Park Authority were told yesterday.
Anne Lee, of the Menwith Hill Women's Peace Campaign, who became the first person to speak directly to the authority's planning committee under a new system, said she believed the increased security was aimed at peace protestors and was a prelude to the Star Wars new generation of missiles.
But county councillor Mike Knaggs, of Malton, said the plans by the Ministry of Defence to erect two sliding gates and a portable cabin at the station entrance and three eight-metre towers on which to mount closed-circuit television systems, should be supported.
The committee agreed to the two schemes after the chief planning officer, Val Dilcock, said the towers would blend in with the existing development at RAF Fylingdales and the gates would be replacing existing gates.
