A MOUNTAINEER gave an inspirational talk to pupils at a County Durham school.
Graham Ratcliffe, the only Briton to have conquered Everest twice, visited Roseberry Comprehensive School in Pelton, near Chester-le-Street.
His appearance was part of the Government's Sporting Champions initiative, which encourages sporting heroes to spend time motivating students.
While at the school, the North Tyneside climber presented staff and pupils with their Sports Mark award on behalf of Sport England.
He also presented pupils aged 11 to 14 with awards for Key Stage Three work and spoke about his school life.
Head of sports, Pam Turner, said: "He talked to the students about his own experiences at school, what inspired him to go on and become a sporting hero, and motivated them to take part in all the opportunities that are available to them."
Roseberry Comprehensive is trying to raise £50,000 to become a specialist sports college.
The school will submit its bid in October and, if successful, will develop sports facilities for the school and community.
