A YOUNG steel band is proving a success after its members were inspired by a workshop held at their school.
In February last year, pupils at Hummersknott Comprehensive School, in Darlington, received a visit from members of Steel Bands North, from Gateshead, who taught them about steel drums.
The pupils, then in year nine, were so impressed they asked their headteacher, David Henderson, to help them set up their own band.
Head of music John Frankland said: "The kids were so enthusiastic that they went to see the headmaster and asked if they could buy some steel drums, and he said yes."
Twelve pans were imported from Trinidad and Steel Attitude was formed by 12 to 15 of the students, who are now in year ten.
After rehearsing, with weekly lessons from Steel Bands North, they have already performed at this year's Darlington Carnival, Heighington village's golden jubilee celebrations, and number of schools in the area.
Anybody wishing to book Steel Attitude for a concert can contact the school on (01325) 241191.
