Long-distance runner Jill Boltz visited Heathfield Primary School, Darlington, to present sports awards.
She holds the world record for 25km street running and has a silver medal in 10,000 metres from the 1990 Commonwealth Games.
At Friday's assembly, attended by 400 pupils, she spoke about the importance of having goals, setting targets and staying dedicated.
Ms Boltz also showed pupils her her Commonwealth Games medal, and two awarded for competing at the Seoul and Barcelona Olympic Games. The school earned the visit after being granted the active mark by Sport Active.
Award winners were: Table-tennis - winners of the Durham primary schools tournament: Rebecca Bell, Danielle Caygill, Harjot Ghundoo, Phillip Caley, Adam Fawcett, Luke Crang. Player of the year: boy, Adam Fawcett; girl, Danielle Caygill.
Netball - player of the year: Alexandra Evans.
Rugby -player of the year: Matthew Haymer.
Football - player of the year: girl, Laura Spence; boy, team members Joe Ditchburn, Phillip Caley, Jack Suttie, Stephen Wayson, Callum Tarren, Gavin Harland, Matthew Haymer.
Sports girl of the year: Laura Gowling.
Sports boy of the year: Phillip Caley.
Commonwealth Games Trophy: Rebecca Bell.
British Heart Foundation special prizes: Nicola Hookway, Rachael Fletcher, Ben Taylor, Ashley Gibson.
