THE restoration of one of Darlington's parks to its Victorian glory will move a step closer this week when contractors are appointed.
South Park, in Darlington, was awarded a £2.9m Heritage Lottery Fund grant after being neglected for years.
On Thursday, Darlington Borough Council is likely to approve the appointment of contractors and a design consultant, who have been involved in the project since the beginning.
The work has not gone out to tender because the council believes the existing contractors are the most suitable for the £3.9m project.
The park will be restored to its 19th Century splendour, with the added benefit of having disabled access.
Plans include restoring the bandstand, installing a terracotta fountain and improving the park's centrepiece lake.
A sensory garden will also be created so people with disabilities can enjoy the area.
There are plans for a ball park and skateboard park.
