THE largest youth sporting event ever held in the North-East attracted 1,000 children, aged eight to 16, at the weekend.
Youngsters who have been recognised as stars of the future took part in Active Sports Talent Camps at venues around the region over two days.
Eighteen sports, including athletics, basketball, hockey, football, rugby, swimming and tennis were used to put future champions through their paces.
The camp also included plenty of opportunities for young athletes with disabilities.
Launched by former North-East Olympic runner Steve Cram in April, and co-ordinated in the region by Sunderland City Council, the camps give youngsters the chance to work with world class coaches.
Many athletes took part in the BBC's Sport Relief campaign to raise money for underprivileged children, an event held at St. Peter's Campus, Sunderland University, on Saturday.
There are nine talent camps throughout the UK, taking place during the five weeks leading up to the Commonwealth Games. The North-East camp is the biggest.
Lynne Dobinson, hockey co-ordinator for Active Sport in County Durham, said: "It's gone superbly, the kids have worked really hard and have shown real commitment."
