EFFORTS to provide more sporting opportunities for young people in Hartlepool have received a massive boost.
The town's School Sport Co-ordinator (SSCo) Partnership has been awarded £131,048 of National Lottery money from the New Opportunities Fund.
The money, 100 per cent of the bid lodged, will be used to tackle disadvantage and disaffection among young people by providing a co-ordinated programme of out of school hours learning activities.
Hartlepool SSCo partnership development manager Paul Jackson said: "I have a strong, dedicated team of teachers who work with me. This extra money will enable us to make a difference."
More than 20 specific projects are being proposed, including:
* A borough-wide series of dance workshops targeting all schools during autumn and spring 2002/03 with the aim of setting up at least one dance club within each secondary school's cluster of feeder schools
* A similar scheme to develop gymnastics clubs
* A project at Kingsley Primary School aimed at Downs Syndrome and dyspraxic young people
* A leisure activity club targeting key stage four girls at High Tunstall School, which will be rolled out to other schools
Funds will be available to schools to launch activities from the first week in September
