ABOUT 200 North-East youngsters have received awards after proving they are assets to their communities.
The youngsters were the second group to complete Sunderland AFC's Shining Through programme, which aims to make local children better citizens.
Launched by the club and Durham County Council in November 2000, the scheme was extended to Sunderland this year.
The football club received nominations from more than 60 schools in the region and those who took part, aged bet-ween five and 16, were presented with their awards by Sunderland vice-chairman John Fickling, at the Stadium of Light.
He said: "It is fantastic to see so many youngsters in the region being recognised for making such an important contribution to their local communities.
"I am delighted that the club can be used to help and encourage young people across the region to invest in and care about themselves, others, and the community.
"The children had a fantastic day, they enjoyed a stadium tour and lunch, and were given goody bags by Samson the Cat."
The youngsters received three types of award; personal achievement, good citizen awards for contribution to school life, and good citizen awards for community life.
They were required to meet criteria such as taking responsibility, teamwork, improved attendance and academic achievements.
