A YOUNG steel band is playing to the beat of its own drums after its members were inspired by a workshop at their school.
Teenagers at Hummersknott School, in Darlington, were visited in February last year by a team from Steel Bands North, from Gateshead, who taught them about steel drums.
The pupils, who were then in Year 9, were so impressed they asked headteacher David Henderson, to help them to set up their own band.
Head of music John Frankland said: "The kids were so enthusiastic that they went to see the headmaster and asked if they could buy some steel drums, and he said yes."
Twelve pans were imported from Trinidad and the result was the formation of Steel Attitude, made up of 12 to 15 of the students, who are now in Year 10.
After rehearsing, with weekly lessons from Steel Bands North, they have already performed at this year's Darlington Carnival, at Heighington village's Golden Jubilee celebrations, and at a number of schools in the area.
Anybody who would like to book Steel Attitude for a concert should call the school on (01325) 241191.
