COLOURFUL costumes made by residents were the star attractions at a carnival parade yesterday.
Residents of Cassop and Quarr-ington Hill made the costumes as part of an arts project funded by a Government grant and supported by Durham City Arts.
Workshops were held in the vi-llage community centre twice weekly for five weeks, at which people of all ages made outfits on the theme of nature, helped by artist Malcolm Smith.
They produced about 20 outfits including flowers, butterflies, monkeys and a giant caterpillar for the parade, which took place at Cassop Primary School as part of an annual family picnic.
This was the school's second celebration this month, after a gold Artsmark award was presented by Pop Idol Zoe Birkett at Newcastle's Live Theatre on Friday.
