POLICE in Redcar and Cleveland have issued a warning to school yard vandals as the summer holidays approach. Officers will step up patrols at all primary and secondary schools.
Superintendent Dee Collins, of Langbaurgh police, said: "Schools are vulnerable to misuse and vandalism over the summer break. We will challenge anyone found on school premises and, where offences are committed, youths will be cautioned or prosecuted."
SUMMER FAIR: Grenfell Club for people with learning disabilities is holding a summer fair tomorrow, at 1pm, in Grenfell Club, Ridley Street, Redcar. Stalls will include bric-a-brac, cakes and tombola and there will be a puppet show and bouncy castle. Admission is free.
CARNIVAL DAY: A day of fun and music is promised during a band carnival at West Redcar Community School, Kirkleatham Lane, tomorrow. The event, between 11am and 3pm, will feature stalls, eight visiting bands and refreshments. Entry is free.
PRIZE WINNERS: Pupils at Bydales School, Redcar, have scooped £500 in a national competition on citizenship. Eight youngsters, aged 13 and 14, took third prize in the Co-operative Insurance Society contest, after writing a play about why children should say no to strangers. The money will be used to help the pupils stage their play at primary schools across the borough.
DRUGS ARRESTS: Police in Middlesbrough carried out seven drugs raids last week as part of their Dealer a Day campaign. Officers arrested two people on drugs supply offences and both were bailed pending forensic results.
FLAG DAY: Redcar Lifeboat Station will stage its annual flag day on Saturday. The day-long event will feature visits from lifeboats from Hartlepool and Staithes at noon, and helicopter and aerobatic displays between 1.30pm and 3pm.
NEW NAME: A £20m secondary school in South Middlesbrough is to be called The King's Academy. The school, which opens in September, replaces Coulby Newham and Brackenhoe secondary schools, and will also take pupils from Beverley School for the Deaf.
ANTIQUE FAIR: An antique fair will take place at St Nicholas' Parish Hall, Bow Street, Guisborough, on Saturday, July 27, between 10am and 4pm.
