VETERANS of one of the major battles of the Second World War will be marching together at the weekend.
The battle of Kohima, in Burma, was one of the turning points of the war, halting the advance of the Japanese in Asia.
In 1944, after battling through monsoon rain and treacherous terrain, the Army's Second Division, with the Durham Light Infantry among many others, succeeded in taking Kohima after desperate hand-to-hand fighting.
On Saturday, veterans will be entertained at York's Imphal barracks, which takes its name from the plain where Kohima is situated.
On Sunday, there will be a service in Dean's Park, at York Minster, where the Second Division has its memorial.
