THE Royal Navy vessel HMS York will be paying a call on the North-East this weekend, spending three days at Newcastle.
The warship, the adopted ship of the city of York, will enter the Tyne at about 10am on Friday and dock at Spillers Wharf about 90 minutes later.
Earlier this year HMS York was deployed to the Middle East in support of coalition anti-terrorist operations.
She was an essential part of the navy's amphibious task group conducting Operation Oracle, part of the UK's commitment to Operation Enduring Freedom, the international effort to counter the growth of worldwide terrorism.
She has spent a busy period at sea in the Gulf of Aden, continually providing air, surface and sub-surface protection for the entire task group.
During Operation Jacana, in April, she accompanied HMS Ocean when elite troops from 45 Commando were sent into Afghanistan. During that time her helicopter joined US forces searching for al Qaida fugitives.
HMS York will open to visitors on Sunday, from 1pm to 5pm
