A FAMILY went for a night out and returned home to discover a tent pitched in their front garden had been burned to the ground.
The green tent had been in the front garden of their home in Stockerley Road, Delves Lane, where they had left it before going to a friend's house last Friday to stay the night.
But when they returned the next morning at 9am the tent had been destroyed.
A spokesman for the police said: "There were some items inside like a radio cassette, coat and cushions. But it doesn't look as though whoever did this looked inside before they set fire to it, because it was totally destroyed."
The tent had been only a few feet away from the front wall of the home. Luckily the flames did not spread to the building.
It is believed the tent was set alight between 3am and 4am on Saturday.
Witnesses are asked to call Consett CID on (01207) 504204.
