STAFF from a doctors' practice in Newton Aycliffe have been presented with an award for learning medical language.
Ten members of the administrative staff at Dr Martin and Partners have completed a 16-week medical terminology course.
They learned the origins of medical terminology, how the different systems work in the human body, and the medical terms associated with it.
The staff covered some of the common procedures carried out in hospitals that they may come across in patient notes or insurance reports, and various abbreviations associated with general practice and hospitals.
The training was organised by practice manager Maureen Kersley, who said: "All the administrative staff that took part in the programme said they enjoyed the training and that they had learned a lot in a fun and interesting way.
"They also felt able to go back to the practice with enthusiasm, increased knowledge and skills."
Alan Gray, chairman of Sedgefield Primary Care Trust, said: "I would like to congratulate the GP staff on successfully completing the course and receiving this award. Sedgefield Primary Care Trust recognise the valuable contribution of receptionists and administrative staff in primary care."
