AS schools close for summer, £500,000 worth of work has begun on improvements in Darlington.
The bulk of the work, being funded by Darlington Borough Council, will take place at Dodmire Junior School, where about £300,000 is being spent on replacing the final two mobile classrooms in the grounds.
While a permanent classroom will be built in their place, asbestos will be removed from the main school building and a new boiler installed.
Heighington Church of England School will receive an £80,000 additional classroom.
A further £55,000 of funding will pay for rewiring work across the school.
Later this year, work is expected to begin on an £82,000 hall extension at the village school.
Various smaller projects are also being carried out at other Darlington schools during the summer break, including installation of new windows, kitchen facilities and boilers.
