A SCHOOL crossing warden has retired after nearly a quarter of a century working to help children stay safe.
Joan Stothard has been guiding children across the road outside Broom Cottages Primary School, in Ferryhill, since 1979.
She has been there so long that youngsters she once guided to safety now have children of their own attending the school.
Mrs Stothard, who turns 65 on Monday, said an emotional farewell to children and staff yesterday.
She said: "I have helped three generations across this road and I have made friends that I've still got today, by just talking to them outside the school gates. It has been a very emotional week"
Mrs Stothard was presented with a garden seat, inscribed with a plaque, to mark her retirement.
Headteacher Ken Banks said she had become much more than just the "lollipop lady" over the past 23 years.
She has helped out in many ways, including making costumes for school plays and assisting at the annual Christmas party.
Mrs Stothard intends to continue her links with the St John Ambulance Brigade and Ferryhill Operatic Society.
