A BUS driver who had to give up his job because of his failing eyesight has earned a degree in art.
Michael McIntyre's achievement is made the more remarkable because his sight deteriorated further throughout his course.
Mr McIntyre graduated yesterday with a degree in fine art from Northumbria University, Newcastle.
The 54-year-old, from Middlesbrough, was diagnosed with diabetes in 1982 and it affected his eyesight so badly that he had to give up his job.
A long-term interest in art prompted him to take classes at local colleges and he embarked on an Access course with a view to securing a place at Northumbria University.
Mr McIntyre said: "My art tries to explain to people what it is like to be blind or partially blind, how we see objects fade and recede and take on different shapes.''
As well as determination, Mr McIntyre has needed time and patience to complete his course. He has made the journey from Middlesbrough to Newcastle almost every day for three years and clocked up 52,600 miles by bus.
