CHILDREN on Teesside are being asked to pledge their support for rare breeds of farm animals.
The Rare Breeds Survival Trust is holding a National Rare Breeds Week, starting on Saturday next week, when children will be able to find out more about farming and food matters and take part in quizzes and nature trails.
Young visitors to Newham Grange Leisure Farm, in Coulby Newham, Middlesbrough, will be invited to join a Survivors Club and sign a pledge to protect rare breeds, for which they will receive a certificate and be entered in a prize draw.
They will also be able to meet eight Gloucestershire Old Spot piglets which were born there last Saturday.
* Visitors to the farm next Wednesday will be able to have a go at milking a Jersey cow between 11am and 4pm. The following day, a scarecrow-making event will take place, with prizes for the best boy and girl scarecrows. The fun starts at 1pm.
