FIREFIGHTERS battled for an hour to contain a blaze at a historic house on the North Yorkshire coast yesterday.
The first floor of Tannebaum, on Ruswarp Bank, near Whitby, was severely damaged. Nobody was hurt in the incident, which officers believe was caused by an electrical fault.
Assistant divisional officer Chris Stark said the occupants were alerted by a smoke detector. He added: "Had a smoke detector not been fitted, and given the speed with which the fire spread, it is possible this incident could have had a very different outcome."
