YOUNG engineers from the region are celebrating after winning a national competition based on the BBC television show Robot Wars.

Two teams from Teesdale School, in Barnard Castle, County Durham, took on fellow young engineers from the around the country in Rex's Robot Challenge.

One of the teams - Quackattack - walked away national junior champions and were presented with a cheque for £1,000.

The teams took only five weeks to build their robots, from pop bottles, golf trolley wheels and drainpipes.

The second team, which reached the semi-finals stage, finished third in the national final.

Teacher Peter Thwaites, from Teesdale School, said: "Although Quackattack lost their final battle to a very competitive all-girl team from Wales, they had accrued an insurmountable number of points from the obstacle course and engineering section of the competition and were declared national junior champions.

"The team was presented with a cheque for £1,000 and a unique trophy made from parts of robots that featured in the BBC television show Robot Wars, and the wing from a Formula One racing car."
