PROTESTORS turned out in force yesterday to a Picnic in the Park event to make their voices heard against plans to build on it.
The Friends of the Park group, set up by people living in Billingham, is angry at proposals to build on the John Whitehead Park as part of regeneration plans for the town.
They teamed up with the Save Our Theatre Group, which wants to save Billingham Forum Theatre, for the event.
Last month, Stockton Borough Council's cabinet decided to defer plans for the regeneration of Billingham's town centre.
The £25m leisure, learning and health complex would also lead to the demolition of the Billingham Forum Theatre.
Yesterday, people living in the town were invited to the picnic to air their views on the proposals.
Kevin Bowler, from Save Our Theatre, said: "Since our formation on May 16, the council has agreed to defer its decision for the regeneration of Billingham.
"Please do not think that because we have gone quiet we have stopped the fight.
"We are working on ideas and the first of which was the picnic."
