Darlington people could have been forgiven for doing a double-take yesterday, if they saw a flying octopus and a big blue bear floating over Eastbourne Comprehensive School.
The unusual blots on the town's skyline were part of the second annual Darlington Kite Festival, which took place in the school grounds.
Up to 1,000 people are believed to have attended the event, which was organised by Darlington Rotary Club and sponsored by Magnet.
About 30 kite fliers took part, from across England and Scotland.
Event organiser and Darlington Rotary Club member Andrew Fenner said: "This is the second year, and we are learning as we are going on, but on the whole it has been going well."
The day also involved an inter-pub tug-of-war. In the final the Dolphin Centre beat the Queen's Head.
