OBJECTIONS are being made to plans to alter flight paths from an RAF training base in the region.

Three flight path proposals have been submitted by RAF Linton-on-Ouse, North Yorkshire, for approval by Hambleton District Council.

Council officers have recommended one model which would see flying reduced over Tollerton, Aldwark and Youlton, and over Thorpe Underwood. Under this plan, there would be no more flights over Alne, near Easingwold.

Newton-on-Ouse, which at present is not over-flown, would see almost 30 per cent of the base's flight traffic passing over it if the plan is acted upon. The parish council has registered its opposition to the proposal.

"The village is already affected by additional traffic to and from RAF Linton-on-Ouse," the parish council stated in its report.

Similar opposition has also been voiced by the parish council for the village of Linton-on-Ouse itself.

Hambleton's director of planning, Steve Quartermain, said in his report that there was no official council policy on over-flying by military aircraft.

He said they had tried to distribute the flying load fairly and minimise noise where possible, in line with people's right to peaceful enjoyment of their property.

He added: "Noise is an inevitable consequence of flying activities, and, as can be expected, most people would prefer not to be subjected to it at all.

"However, in the case of the RAF, where there are no legislative controls, it is left to the latter to try and minimise noise or distribute it more equitably. No matter what circuits are flown, some residents will object."

The proposals are due to be considered at Thursday's cabinet meeting.
