UNION leaders concerned about staff cuts at the Labour Party's regional offices have written to the Government for clarification.
The GMB has become increasingly concerned that, as the party's finances dip, more staff may lose their jobs at the Millbank headquarters, in London, or at regional offices, including South Shields, in South Tyneside.
Just over a year ago, many staff transferred to the North-East from Millbank.
Yesterday, the GMB in London wrote to the general secretary of the Labour Party, David Triesman, asking about the exact situation regarding its members' future.
GMB organiser Tom Greatrex said: "The current continuous talk about the party's £6m debt, and the trouble over donations, is causing great concern to our members who work for the Labour Party.
"We would like David Triesman to talk to us and let us know what the exact situation is regarding our members' future. Some people have only been with the party for a short time since last year's cutbacks."
