A KEY member of Durham University's only all-female college has died aged 77.
Dr Edna Jenkinson joined the university in 1954, becoming resident tutor at St Mary's College, where she provided help and support for students until 1973.
She was also president of the senior common room, which had members including university staff, as well as people from the city and surrounding region.
She was also a member of the governing body between 1959 and 1999.
Dr Jenkinson became a senior lecturer in classics in 1968. She retired in 1985.
A spokesman for the university said: "St Mary's College is the only single sex college and is currently celebrating its 50th anniversary on its modern site on Elvet Hill Road.
"For most of that period, Dr Jenkinson has been a major player in the life of the college.
"She would have helped hundreds, if not thousands, of students to settle into their studies.
"As an officer of the college, she contributed to its growth."
A funeral service for Dr Jenkinson, who was not married, was held at Durham Crematorium yesterday.
The crematorium was filled with friends, family and former colleagues, including two former principals of St Mary's College and the present vice-principal, Dr Gillian Boughton.
The service was led by the Reverend Margaret Parker
