FORTRESSES and castle ramparts fired children's imaginations when they took part in a medieval history lesson.
As part of a project looking at castles and the people who lived in them, pupils from Witton Gilbert Primary School, near Sacriston, visited Lumley Castle, near Chester-le-Street and were given a tour of the hotel.
The youngsters were also asked to paint a picture of the castle in a competition set by the hotel.
Hotel manager Sylvia Lowes said: "We had an excellent response from the pupils.
"The standard of paintings we received was incredible and choosing a winner was very difficult."
All the children who took part received sticker books.
The winning artists, Oliver Towns and Dionne Crowe, both aged five, also received Lumley Castle's official teddy bear, Lord Lumpey
