GARDEN SHOW: The Egglescliffe Garden Club annual show was held last Saturday, at Egglescliffe Primary School.
The show was a great success with more than 300 entries and the standard in each of the 79 classes was excellent. The main awards were: shield for best handicraft in show - Mrs N Fleming; shield for best vegetable or fruit in show - Mrs J Fletcher, for her peas; shield for best horticultural exhibit - Mrs S Walker, with her clematis (a new class this year); shield for best fuchsia - Mrs C Marshall; shield for best exhibit in home baking - Mrs J Fletcher, for her butterfly cakes. The Morgan cup for best novice (newcomer) was presented to Mrs R Nicholson, for getting a first with her foliage plant and a second with her hosta leaf. The crystal award for best flower arrangement went to Mrs G Scott and the TMS Cup, awarded for the highest points in the show, went to Mrs J Fletcher. Mrs M McKenna won the cup for the best exhibit in the show, with her bowl of floating flower heads.
PAWNBROKING: The next item on the agenda at Links Women's Institute is pawnbroking, on August 4. All women are welcome to join the group, which meets on the first Tuesday of each month in the main hall at All Saints' Church, Swinburne Road, Eaglescliffe, from 7.30pm to 9.30pm. They listen to speakers, make crafts and discuss matters, local and national. For further information, contact Kath Richardson on (01642) 782711.
CRAFT SESSIONS: Take part in the space-themed craft sessions at Egglescliffe Library next Tuesday, from 11am to noon, or Yarm library next Wednesday, from 2pm to 3pm. The events are free but numbers are limited so please see a member of staff to book a place. Children under five must be accompanied by an adult throughout the event and children under eight must be accompanied to and from the event.
DOG SHOW: Egglescliffe and District Dog Training Club is holding a show tonight. The venue is the St John's Scout hall in Croft Road, Eaglescliffe, and the judging will commence at 7.30pm. Mrs Bright is the judge. The show, which is Kennel Club registered, will have obedience, novelty and show classes with rosettes to three places and small prizes. Admission is £2 per dog for members and £3 per dog for non-members. For more information, contact Andrew or Debbie Short, on (01642) 893480, or Sheila Ewing, on (01642) 648191.
VICARAGE PLAN: The vicarage at Kirklevington will probably be sold and a house built to replace it. In this month's parish news, the Venerable Paul Ferguson, Archdeacon of Cleveland, writes that the Victorian house is large, and it and the grounds need a lot of maintenance. For many years, part of the vicarage gardens has been used as the village playground, agreed by licence. The diocese says it would prefer to sell this land to the parish council to remain as a playground, rather than sell it for building.
NEWWARDEN: Kate Brown was unanimously elected churchwarden at St Martin's, Kirklevington, and will work alongside Brian Claybrook.
CHURCH VISITS: Members of Kirklevington Mothers' Union are planning a visit to the churches of Lastingham, Helmsley, and Pickering, in North Yorkshire, on Tuesday, July 30.
