Doctor David Walker is County Durham and Tees Valley Health Authority's new director of public health.
Dr Walker, who has been on secondment to Newcastle and North Tyneside Health Authority for 12 months, was formerly deputy director of public health and consultant in communicable disease control.
For the past six years he has also been honorary lecturer in epidemiology and public health at Newcastle University.
