COUNCILLORS have criticised a decision to drop plans to build a long-awaited bypass at an accident blackspot.
Liberal Democrat councillors on North Yorkshire County Council have criticised a decision to delay a long-awaited bypass for at least a decade.
The cost of the scheme for the villages of Burniston and Cloughton, on the A171 Scarborough-to-Whitby road, is estimated at about £8m.
Lib-Dem Councillor Bill Hoult said "As elected members we have an obligation to support our local communities and people of North Yorkshire, even if our pleas fall on deaf ears."
The decision to shelve the scheme was taken by the Conservative-controlled executive at County Hall as a cost cutting measure, he said.
Coun Hoult said that, since 1996, there had been 44 accidents, including at least one death, in or near the villages.
