VILLAGERS who are on the verge of securing a bypass after a 30-year battle have now been told work will not start for another six years.
Residents of Shipton-by-Beningbrough, on the A19 near York, were jubilant when North Yorkshire County Council agreed to put the scheme forward for consideration by the Government. But their celebrations were tinged with disappointment when it emerged that, even if funding was approved, work would not start until 2008 at the earliest.
Campaigner Bill Hiles, who started a petition after a lorry ploughed into his garden, said: "We are well down the list of priorities, which we aren't very pleased about.
"But this campaign is far from over - things in politics change, and we intend to make sure this is one of those things."
