FORTRESSES and castle ramparts fired the imagination of children taking part in a medieval history lesson recently.
Pupils at Witton Gilbert Primary School have been learning about castles and the people who lived in them. The highlight of the project was a visit to Lumley Castle near Chester-le-Street, which included a tour of the hotel.
As part of the project the hotel set a competition for the students to paint a picture of their castle.
Hotel manager Sylvia Lowes said: "We had an excellent response from the pupils.
"The standard of paintings we received was incredible and choosing a winner was very difficult."
All children who took part received sticker books and winning artists Oliver Towns and Dionne Crowe, both five, received Lumley Castle's official teddy bear Lord Lumpey.
