CHILDREN are being encouraged to beat the summer holiday blues by taking part in workshops run by York Archaeological Trust.
Activity days are being staged at the trust's excavation site at St Leonard's Trust. The area contains remains of Roman fortress defences, some standing more than three metres high. Workshops take place on August 20 and 27 for youngsters aged six to 16. To book places, call (01904) 654324.
RECORD SUMMER: Hamble-ton Leisure Centre, Northallerton, has seen more than 700 youngsters take part in activity sessions throughout the summer holidays. Places are still available for various courses, including sessions with Yorkshire Cricket Club. For details, call (01609) 777070.
SPORTS AWARDS: Almost 80 youngsters were honoured at the Richmondshire Local Sports Council 2002 Junior Sports Awards. The awards are run in partnership with Richmondshire District Council. The ceremony was at Richmond School. The awards were presented by Councillor Michael Heseltine and Randall Orchard, of sponsors Randall Orchard Construction.
SECURITY STANDARD: A four-street development of 70 houses and flats off Seamer Road, Scarborough, has been awarded Secured by Design Awards by the police.
DUCKRACE: A duck race is to be held on the beck at Pickering tomorrow to help raise cash for Stape Silver band which is planning a European tour next year. The race starts at 11am and finishes outside the Safeway supermarket.
ROAD CLOSURE: Part of Water Lane and Burdyke Avenue in York are to be closed between Tuesday and Friday to allow carriageway works to be carried out.
