A COUNCIL is warning that it will crack down on dog owners who flout poop scoop laws.

Newcastle City Council issued the warning after a man was fined £100 and ordered to pay £250 costs for not clearing up his dog's mess.

David Harrison Jnr, of Brig-ham Avenue, Montagu Estate, Newcastle, was seen walking away after his dog fouled a verge. The witness contacted the council and gave a statement that was used in court.

Mr Harrison pleaded not guilty, but was found guilty by the city's magistrates.

Linda Wright, council cabinet member for environment, public health and safety, said: "The city council means business when it comes to cracking down on dog fouling.

"Not only is it unpleasant for anyone using our public open spaces, but the dangers it can pose to human health are also well known. Others should be in no doubt of our continuing fight against such irresponsible behaviour."
