NEARLY 400 people have joined new projects which encourage them to stay fit by adopting a healthier way of life.
The National Lottery funds the Passport to Health programme, which is half way through its first year in the Sedgefield borough.
Kick the Habit and Quit for Life smoking courses have just finished in Ferryhill and Newton Aycliffe, and further classes are planned.
Healthy Lifestyle courses have been organised in Fishburn and Trimdon Village, and are due to start next month in Ferryhill and Chilton.
The first Community Allotment is under way in Fishburn, and Trimdon Village has been targeted for a pilot scheme to encourage people to become more active and stay fit by growing their own produce
A Fit for Life scheme has been based at leisure centres and other venues across the borough.
Sedgefield Befriending Scheme has begun its first evening drop-in session in Spennymoor, with weekend drop-ins at Newton Aycliffe and Trimdon Village.
School pupils train in peer education and support through an Out There project, increasing young people's awareness of health issues.
