NOT many newly-weds can claim to have had a horse race named after them, but for one North-East couple it was all part of their big day.
When trainer Brian Ellison married Claire Bell, of Durham, yesterday he had an unusual surprise for her - an afternoon of racing.
The bridegroom, who had seven of his horses from his Malton stables taking part in races at the Sedgefield course, in County Durham, named a race in her honour. The wedding guests and other spectators were treated to The Brian and Claire Ellison Race.
Claire was delighted. She said: "It's lovely, it was a really nice surprise. It has been great. We could not have wished for a nicer day."
It was back to work for Brian shortly after he tied the knot at Durham Register Office. He said: "The job comes first."
Bridesmaid Glynis Brydon said it was a perfect gift. "It is what they both wanted from the start and this is a favoured racecourse for them. They are both really happy."
