Arsenal have claimed their first trophy of the season after beating Liverpool 1-0 in the Community Shield at the Millennium Stadium, Cardiff.
A debut goal from Brazilian World Cup winner Gilberto Silva was enough to hand Arsene Wenger's men a confidence-boosting win ahead of next week's Premiership curtain-raiser.
Silva, a recent £4.5m capture from Atletico Mineiro, grabbed the all-important goal in the 69th minute, driving the ball beyond Jerzy Dudek from Dennis Bergkamp's cutback.
Martin Keown and Sol Campbell formed a solid partnership at the heart of the Arsenal defence, giving little away to a three-pronged Liverpool attack, consisting of Michael Owen, Emile Heskey and Senegalese World Cup star El-Hadji Diouf.
Heskey came closest to finding the net for Gerard Houllier's side when he was denied by England teammate David Seaman at the near post.
