A NEW award scheme has been launched which aims to preserve some of the region's wildlife habitats.
Churchyards and burial grounds can be a haven for species of wildflower, butterflies, birds and small mammals.
The Yorkshire Wildlife Trust has joined npower to offer awards to the best examples in the area.
''We are delighted to be launching these awards,'' said Yorkshire Living Churchyards officer, Elizabeth Hardcastle.
''Many volunteers do so much to help and encourage wildlife in churchyards and, with npower's support, we are able to recognise their hard work and acknowledge their achievements.''
