A GALA which started as a Millennium project is proving popular with residents.
The people of Ferryhill flocked to the market square at the weekend where music, fairground rides and a wide range of attractions kept them entertained.
Community groups put forward ideas for the gala, which has been organised by Ferryhill Town Council since it started in 2000.
Ferryhill History Society staged an exhibition in the town hall and there was music from Ferryhill Brass Band, a dog show, a fancy dress competition and display of children's art. Refreshments were served in the council's E-Caf and the stage was filled with a busy programme of music and dancing.
Stephanie Whitfield, aged 12, was crowned carnival queen with her attendant, eight-year-old Beth Jewitt.
Town clerk Jamie Corrigan said: "The idea for the gala came from an appraisal to find out what people wanted in the town.
"They wanted an annual event in the market square and the gala is the result. It is getting bigger and better every year."
