DEVASTATED pigeon fanciers were last night counting the cost of a suspected arson attack that wiped out their collection of 48 birds.
Police investigating the incident, which destroyed three lofts in the village of Bearpark, near Durham, believe the fire was started deliberately.
Flames were spotted coming from the crees, at the rear of Taylor Avenue, shortly after midnight yesterday.
By the time firefighters arrived neither the lofts nor the 48 birds, valued at £8,000, could be saved. Several baskets, bird feed and tools were also destroyed.
Police said the birds' owners were "shattered" by what had happened and had spent much of yesterday clearing up the debris and removing the carcasses of the birds.
Crime scene investigators were on site to preserve and collect evidence, while local beat officers made inquiries in the area.
They appealed for information from anyone who saw anything suspicious on Monday night or early yesterday in the vicinity, or who knows who may be responsible.
They are asked to contact PC Ian Robinson, via the main switchboard at Durham City police station, on 0191-386 4222, or Crimestoppers, on (0800) 555111.
