A NEW project has been launched which aims to bring entertainment and advice to young people living in Dales communities, miles from the nearest youth club, cinema or leisure centre.

Youngsters with nowhere to go are frequently blamed for outbreaks of vandalism and nuisance.

In Catterick, Colburn and Richmond, police and the local authorities have been trying to combat the problem, by combining public debate with initiatives which aim to give young people more constructive alternatives.

However, complaints of boredom are perhaps even more acute in rural villages and hamlets - and it has been agreed a Dales Youth Van could be a solution.

The project was first suggested by the vicar of Askrigg, the Reverend Ann Chapman - but an action group has now been formed to raise the estimated £30,000 needed to pay for the vehicle.

The fund has been boosted by an immediate donation of £13,000 by the Richmondshire Community Safety Partnership.

Now, another two events have been confirmed which organisers hope will take the total nearer the target.

The Wyvill Arms, at Constable Burton, hosts a pop quiz from 8.30pm next Thursday, with all the proceeds going towards the appeal.

Then, on Saturday, September 7, Bolton Castle will come alive to the sound of soul music from the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s, while a barbecue and licensed bar will be offering refreshment.

"A working group was set up to consider Ann Chapman's idea of a mobile facility for young people in the Dales and, after consultation, it was decided the most favoured option was the Dales Youth Van which could travel to every village," said North Yorkshire Police Youth Action Officer, PC Gary Lewis.

"It was felt there is a desire to reach young people who do not attend a local youth club but who, nevertheless, have needs. The Youth Van will offer social and recreational opportunities, as well as access to specialist youth workers dealing with alcohol and substance misuse and health issues."

Tickets for the Soul in the Dales evening will cost £10.
