A JUDGE warned two brothers that the wages of crime are longer spells in prison.
Yesterday, Judge Michael Taylor told Michael Watson, 35, that he was looking at a five-year jail sentence, and said that his brother, Phillip, 33, was heading the same way.
But the judge said that he would give the elder brother one last chance, with an 18- month jail sentence, adding that he knew what to expect the next time.
Michael Watson pleaded guilty to stealing a mobile phone from a heroin addict who owed him £20 for drugs. His brother admitted handling the phone and selling it on.
Michael Watson, of Osbert Place, Newton Aycliffe, also pleaded guilty to causing affray when he threatened the Newton Aycliffe addict not to go to the police.
He also admitted an unrelated burglary, and the theft of handbag in Bolton, Greater Manchester. The offences were committed last March.
Phillip Watson, of the same address, was ordered to do 100 hours community service.
The judge said at Teesside Crown Court: "Michael Watson, you are an institutionalised professional thief and burglar, and you could not complain if I gave you five years today.
"Your younger brother has less of a record, but is in danger of heading the same way. He should learn from what has happened to you."
