THE stage is set for a potential thriller between Richmond and Sessay in the final of the Walter Thompson Granindon Cup at Northallerton CC on Sunday, August 25, starting at 3pm.
Richmond, who booked their place in the final by beating Silton on Monday, are aiming to win the 20-over competition for the first time, while Sessay have lifted the Granindon Cup five times since it began in 1937.
Richmond will also be hoping to make it third time lucky, having lost their only other Granindon Cup final appearances in 1994 (to Middleham) and 1999 (to Wath).
Monday's 60-run semi-final victory over Silton, who had a handicap start of 45 runs, was spearheaded by the Layfield family.
Mark Layfield led the way by scoring 45 and taking 4-11, his 16-year-old son and opening bowler Chris bagged 3-9, while Clive Layfield (37no) and Andy Dade (43no) piled on the runs to take Richmond to 165-2.
In reply, Silton were only able to muster 105 all out. Their hopes of a good start through their own family connection of prolific opening batsmen John Thompson and son David sadly nose-dived.
John was run out in the fourth over soon after cracking a successive six and a four and David quickly followed, adjudged lbw.
Man of the match and winner of the TPSports (Northallerton) award was Richmond's Chris Layfield.
Sessay, who have a 10-run handicap start over Richmond in the final, won through by beating Middleton St George, Crathorne and cup holders Thornton le Moor.
Richmond scored wins over Scruton, Spout House and North Stainley
