THE elegant style of the Victorian era returned to Saltburn this week.
John and Josie Johnson promenaded in their best Victorian costumes to highlight the town's heritage week, which reflected on the area's fishing, mining, smuggling and civic history.
The couple moved to Saltburn 40 years ago from Doncaster, and now live in Ruby Street. Mrs Johnson said: "This is the 14th year we've both dressed up in costume. It all began at an event in 1988, when we recalled the arrival of the railway line, which turned Saltburn into a fashionable resort.
"Many of the ladies' costumes are made from scratch or altered by our members, but the gentlemen's suits are generally bought from shops. People chat to us and are fascinated to hear about the town's past.
"We do Victorian-theme activities with all sorts of people - from working with local school children and visitors, to having tea in the mayor's parlour or attending events elsewhere"
* Saltburn's '53 drama group presents a new production, Channel Crossing, in the theatre, at 7.30pm, until tomorrow. The musical, set in the 'Twenties, was commissioned to support the celebrations.
